A Note from Ernie - January 2019

Dear Friends,

If you happened to miss last week’s milestone announcement, we did it! Los Angeles welcomed 50 million visitors in 2018, accomplishing our North Star goal two years ahead of schedule. This record achievement marks the eighth straight year of tourism growth for the destination and is a moment of shared celebration across our entire hospitality community. Thank you once again to our members and partners that were able to join us at last week’s unveiling, and to all of you for your collective efforts in reaching this milestone.

In reaching 50 million visitors, we set new tourism records for domestic and international visitation, hosting an estimated 42.5 million visitors and 7.5 million international visitors.

Several international markets recorded their highest visitation totals ever in 2018 including Mexico (1.8 million); China (1.2 million); Canada (780,000); U.K. (382,000); Japan (349,000); Scandinavia (190,000); and India (130,000). Not stopping there, the national media spotlight continues to shine bright on Los Angeles. As you may have seen last week, L.A. landed on the highly coveted New York Times list of “Top 52 Places to Go in 2019” – one of only three west coast destinations.

As for what’s next for L.A. Tourism, we’ll be launching our newest global brand campaign and revamped website in February. The road for travel & tourism in 2019 looks positive and I wish you the best for every success in the year ahead.
